Seo Tips for WordPress

So in the last couple of weeks, I took the decision to improve my site drastically. By doing so I have started to attract more visitors to my blog and increase traffic, Google Adsense revenue, and most important the quality of my posts. Here are the steps I took to improve my site and optimize it for search engines, and visitors:

1. Create quality posts: No one wants to visit a site with just stupid pictures or useless information. As of now the most traffic rewarding post, is my blackberry mml mfi unlock post (because a lot of people want this information). Keep creating good posts, because you can’t rely on just one or two posts to make your site climb the pageranks. The more good information you offer the more visitors you will have.

2. Start using tags, and categories properly: By using tags and categories, google and other search engines can accurately index your site. These are done while creating a post, and can be added after during editing.

3. When you write about a product or website or anything for that matter, LINK TO IT. That one is simple unless you are lazy (I used to be haha). When you link to websites your website will become more visible to search engines. You can see how I have demonstrated this well in this post! 😉

4.Use Pretty Urls: Pretty urls, are just urls that are easy to read for search engines (and humans too). These also include the post title inside the url which makes it easier to crawl and index for search engines. To enable pretty urls in wordpress go to your Admin dashboard, click on settings, then click on permalinks. I have mine set to Day and Name.

5. Use Update Services: These services notify the internet that your site has been updated. To use these services go to your WordPress Admin Dashboard, Click on Settings, then click on Writing Settings. Once there copy and paste these urls into the Update Services box and click Save Changes.

6.Plugins: There are a lot of plugins that will help increase traffice to your website (not gaurenteed if you have not followed step 1).

Download and install these plugins on your wordpress installation:

Platinum SEO Pack: This plugin Optimizes Post and Page Titles for search engines and generates all SEO relevant META tags automatically. However you do have to plugin some info about your site but it will take care of the rest.

SEO Friendly Images: This plugin helps by inputting ALT and TITLE attributes for all images in all posts. Before I never really cared about this, but it does make a difference!

Google(XML) Sitemap Generator for WordPress: This plugin creates an xml file full of all the information in your blog and even pages that are not part of your blog (like my spybot download mirror). This helps by allowing search engines to easily navigate your site with all information presented to their crawling robots in an organized manner. The generated sitemap is supported by Ask.com, Google, YAHOO and MSN Search.

Google Analytics for WordPress: I suggest this plugin because some webhosts do not have any stats programs. This plugin will allow you to see different types of information about your visitors, which can help you improve your site. I do have a webhost that has an awesome stats program called Awstats. As for webhosts there are two that I have tried. I am currently using Bluehost and am extremely happy with them. I have also used Ixwebhosting and still reccomened them if you want a cheap/good website that doesn’t need to many features(they also have stats programs).

So that is it for this post, that is what I have done to increase traffic to my website and it actually has worked. I hope this helps your site climb to the top of google’s page ranking, as well as my site. In the next couple of days I will hopefully post another post on how to make your wordpress blog more user friendly and interactive.
